Rhode Island Mammography

The Rhode Island Health Department recognizes that prevention is more cost effective than treatment. They offer free mammograms throughout the state for those that qualify.

What Program Provides Free or Low Cost Mammograms in Rhode Island?

The Women's Cancer Screening Program is run by the RI Department of Health. Breast cancer screenings for women aged 50 and older is funded largely through Center for Disease Control and Prevention. State appropriations pay for mammograms for women aged 40 to 49.

What are the Eligibility Requirements for Free Mammograms in Rhode Island?

To qualify for free breast cancer screenings, women are allowed income based on family size. For a family of one, women are allowed an annual income of $27,075. For a family of two, the allowed annual income is $36, 425. For a family of three, $44,775 is allowed annually. For a family of four, $55,125 is allowed. For a family of five, $64,475 is the maximum allowed annually.

Services provided for the Women's Cancer Screening Program do not require proof of income. If any follow up services are provided by outside sources, the proof may be required.

The mammograms funded by Women's Cancer Screening Program are provided in the office of participating physicians. To determine if a physician is participating in breast cancer screenings, call the program at (401) 222-4324.

What is the Women's Health Network?

The Women's Health Network (WHN) is a program of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. WHN provides free breast and cervical cancer screening, diagnostic services, and health education to low income, uninsured or underinsured women. These services are provided at local health centers, hospitals, and community agencies throughout Massachusetts. At some of the locations, women ages 40 to 64 can also receive free blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes screening, as well as lifestyle interventions to decrease the risk of heart disease and stroke.
